Apartment Peepers – Lisa von Weise Shaw

Lisa Von Weise Shaw. NYC - December 2011

The first thing that strikes you upon entering the Manhattan home of stylist and blogger Lisa von Weise Shaw, and her husband, Photography Director Ivan Shaw, are hundreds of glossy books.  From Chanel to Caravaggio to Patrick Demarchelier, gorgeous coffee table books are everywhere in their floor to ceiling windowed apartment, almost becoming the furniture themselves.
The home, which von Weise Shaw describes as “early modern”, is very much reflective of the couple.  Family heirlooms sit along side wedding gifts from Calvin Klein, additions from Modernica and Adelaide (the couple’s favorite home store), and Yves Saint Laurent handbags.  Stunning black and white photography by Helmut Newton, Annie Leibovitz and Steven Meisel, dominate nearly every inch of wall space.  Pillows from John Robshaw compliment pieces from John Derian, where the couple registered for their wedding one year ago last December.  In every corner lies some small treasure, evidence of two lifetimes worth of culture and creative discoveries, merged together, as the couple have themselves.

von Weise Shaw’s closet is a nod to her 20 years as a stylist, whose credits include Vogue, Natalie Portman, Angelina Jolie, Vanity Fair, and Bruce Springsteen.  Labels like Balenciaga  Alaïa, and Dries Van Noten are impeccably organized; each piece chosen carefully to compliment her well defined sense of style.  As is the case with their home, there are no impulse buys to be found; everything serves or fulfills a purpose or specific need.  George Esquivel shoes (“the most comfortable shoes ever created”), are easily accessible, for days spent running from showroom to showroom.  A custom made Juan Carlos Obando hangs over the door, awaiting it’s appearance at the CFDA/ Vogue Fashion Fund Dinner, which Von Weise Shaw will be attending that evening.

Sitting in a sunny corner of the living room, is a 1930’s desk passed down through her husband’s family from the renowned Glenmere Mansion.  This is where von Weise Shaw spends most of her day, blogging for her own site and frequently contributing to l-atitude.com.  It’s also where she sits today, wearing a Balenciaga sweater and a skirt by Isabel Marant.  An Alexis Bittar bracelet glitters on one wrist and a watch from Hermes is wrapped around the other.  Hanging around her neck lies a bone cross by Thorn and a Cathy Waterman diamond necklace.

Peeping into someones home is like stepping inside their head; you get a glimpse of who they really are by seeing what they’ve chosen to surround themselves with every day; collections of glossy fashion books, of photography, of items shopped for and purchased together that forever hold a memory of the time spent choosing it.  The von Weise/Shaw home shows a passion for their lives, their work, and each other.
