Azzedine Alaïa: The Couturier

A new retrospective titled Azzedine Alaia: The Couturier, co-curated by the designer himself, will celebrate the extraordinary career, spanning over thirty years of haute couture, of Azzedine Alaia. Conceived with Alaia before his November death, the exhibition documents the designer’s journey from sculptor to couturier.

The retrospective will feature over sixty samples of Alaia’s work from the last three and a half decades. Credited for his mastery of tailoring and innovative garments, Alaia was a creator who understood the fluidity of sculpture. With this, the designer’s work will display alongside specially-commissioned architectural pieces, including the likes of Tatiana Trouve, Kris Ruhs, Konstantin Grcic and Marc Newson.

Emphasizing Alaia’s infectious energy and nonconformist nature, the exhibition does not only encapsulate this essence, but will also provide a rare insight into the creative process of Alaia, presenting his work as he himself intended it to be seen. The Tunisian couturier was rare in his capability to still adhere to a garment, constructing each by hand, refusing to succumb to the pressures of velocity within the industry. The exhibition features stories of his life and career alongside personal selections from the 1980s to 2017.

London’s newly opened Design Museum will honor the life and work of Azzedine Alaia starting on May 10th and will run until October 7th, 2018.
