Beauty: Keeping Your Skin in Check when Traveling the Long Haul

Ever noticed before travel how your skin looks and feels?

Traveling at times can equal stress and that’s even before you have left the country, this level of anxiety can make your skin become dry and sensitive resulting in an increase in redness, maybe inflammatory conditions like eczema or psoriasis.

Why does this happen to your skin? The air pressure on the airplane that surrounds us is recycled air and the higher the altitude the less blood flow to the skin, which may result in fine lines and wrinkles becoming more noticeable and your complexion looking lifeless.

Our suggested recommendation before flying is to book in with your beauty therapist 1 or 2 days before you fly to get a deep cleansing facial with steam, exfoliation, extraction, high frequency and either a hydrating mask or an oxygenating facial. Why not visit our 2017 awarding MATIS facialist of the year Fere at Neville salon.

If you don’t have time then why not try a gentle exfoliation before you fly Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Cleanser: Gently removes excess oil, make up and surface impurities. Contains a duo of alpha hydroxyl acids – glycolic and lactic acids, as well as pineapple, pumpkin and papaya enzymes great way to cleanse without over-drying the skin. Followed by a hydrating mask GLAMGLOW Thristymud Hydrating Treatment: Infuses dry skin with long-lasting moisture, this innovative Dewdration and HydraPack technologies, deeply nourishes can be used morning, evening or in-flight to rejuvenate the skin Hyaluronic Acid is blended with Raw Honey and Ginger Root to soften and condition.

For long haul flights it’s best to skip the make up, as the air in the cabin is typically pretty dry and harsh. Our suggested flight travel pack to put in your carry on luggage:

Simple Facial Wipes: Lifts away make up, dirt, grease, and impurities and even waterproof mascara, instantly hydrates doesn’t dry out, irritate or leave residue. Contains vitamin B5 and vitamin E. Great way to refresh your skin.

Clinique – Moisturisers Dramatically Different Moisturising Gel: Oil-free moisturiser quenches skin’s thirst whilst strengthening its barriers, keeping essential moisture locked in for all day hydration.

Weleda Lip Balm: Scented with natural vanilla, this long lasting quality formulation contains jojoba oil, beeswax, cocoa butter, carnauba wax and rose wax (SPF4). A blend of natural waxes protects lips.

M& S Cherry Blossom Petal-Soft Hand Cream: Enriched with shea butter and vitamin E, this lightly textured and non-greasy cream nourishes and protects hands from daily aggressions. Delicately perfumed with Cherry Blossom’s flowery scent.

It’s important to remember what we put into our mouths also affects our skin airport snacks that contain fat sugar and salt are dehydrating and can cause inflammation in the skin. Try and opt for eating healthy meals like fresh fruits and drink plenty of water. Try to avoid alcohol and caffeine as these too can dry out your skin and give facial puffiness – puffy eyelids and dark under eye circles. Lack of real movement while flying can result in fluid retention in the body resulting in swollen ankles and feet try to exercise by gently rotating your ankles and if possibly stretch your legs. Finally Sunscreen this is always a must no matter what time of year or where you are, especially when you are on a long haul flight as UV rays are much more intense at a higher altitude and with the air being thinner some harmful UVB rays and UVA rays can still penetrate the surface, especially if seated by the window. Revive, Hydrate and protect your skin always.
