Beauty: Lip SOS

The skin on the lip is made up of 3 to 5 cellular layers and is very thin compared to the skin on the rest of the face, which typically runs up to 16 layers deep. The mucous membrane of the lips is full of capillaries (tiny blood vessels) that are close to the translucent surface, this is what gives our lips its reddish color.

The difference between our skin and our lips is that our lips don’t have any sebaceous glands, these glands keep our skin moisturised, so our lips only source of moisture is our saliva, and that’s why they can easily become dry and chapped.

As our body ages it produces less of the critical protein called collagen. These signs become apparent on our lips as they start to lose their plumpness and become thinner as we age, the area right around the upper lip is one of those places that start to show lines quickly. Other factors could be down to forgetting to use sunscreen there, and the movement of the radial muscles you use to purse your mouth together (notice in smokers aged in their 40s and 50s deep set lines along the top of their mouths). Some suggestions on how to best save and protect your lips:

Key tip for gorgeous lips is to look for one or more of these ingredients in your lipsticks: Shea butter, clarified butter, vitamin E and jojoba oil. These moisturise your lips and prevent them from drying out. Always remove your lip makeup using a good lip makeup remover or olive or almond or coconut oil.
