Beauty Spotlight: Joanna Vargas

As an esthetician to the stars, Joanna Vargas is the end-all-be-all in the world of skincare. A University of Chicago alum, she’s the final word on providing top of the line treatments (creating a few herself) that have you looking your absolute best without having to go under the knife. Now working with our own OP, we had to sit down with this ‘secret weapon’ and ask her a bit more about how she got to where she is and what she’s looking to do in the future.

  • What was your first introduction into the world of beauty/skincare job-wise? What made you continue in the direction that brought you to where you are today in your career?

My path was a bit unusual for sure! I graduated from college and decided to move to NYC to be a photographer. I realized quickly that I didn’t really have the personality for it- I was shy! I thought perhaps makeup might be a way of being there in a different way, so I went for my esthetics license. Once I tried facials , I knew I had found my passion. I had always loved products and I love taking care of people. It was meant to be.

  • What’s it like to be called a ‘secret weapon’ in the beauty industry?

It’s really such an honor to be thought of in that way. My biggest desire is to make my clients feel more confident and more beautiful versions of themselves. I think people feel that when they are with me and I am very lucky.

  • What’s your favorite part about what you do? Is it the constant learning? The clients? Being innovative?

The most rewarding part of the job by far is when I develop a trusting relationship with a client. I love that people turn to me for advice and trust my opinions on decisions in their life. It’s truly an honor. I have clients that have been coming to me for years and come to me for every major event they have had- weddings, children’s birthdays, graduations etc. The only stress I face comes from this same thing: I work hard to develop relationships and I want to be there when a client needs me- it just requires creative scheduling which can be so tricky being a mom too! In addition to that, I love pushing the beauty industry into the modern era with more technology and innovation. It’s so rewarding to be constantly growing my own skill level and my own knowledge.

  • What was it like to pioneer a treatment (LED bed)? How long did it take to develop the treatment? What are you working on now?

I love that I am known for thinking outside the box. It’s that quality that made my salon successful and makes me excited about my work every single day. I’m working on expanding my salon in Los Angeles at the moment, but I have my eye on a few technologies that I will be testing out when I’m in Los Angeles at the end of the month

  • Are there any goals you’re looking to achieve within the next year? The next five years?

The next year I’m using to expand my skin care line again with some products that I’m excited to share with you guys soon.  The five-year plan will include a downtown NYC location for us and we are working on another patented technology to bring to the marketplace soon!
