Designers To Watch: ashley B

The key to shopping for long-lasting outerwear is finding the most transitional piece in a sea of one-season wonders. While some of our most coveted coats must be retired after a few short months, the ashley B collection gives us the sustainability we long for.

Born and bread right here in the Big Apple, ashley B debuted in 2012 with a collection that has already received some major cred since its’ initial launch by snagging some major retailers as fans – a la, BarneysSaks and Nordstrom – to name a few.  As if any piece covered in leather or fur—or both, in this case—needs further justification, ashley B delivers a modern, utilitarian look perfect for any occasion. Heavily based on complex construction as well as the fusion of luxury fabrics and innovative silhouettes, ashley B provides a very sophisticated blank canvas for what’s to come. Oversized, upright collars and asymmetrical closures help provide style to each piece without a display of outward embellishment we often see from other designers. While this all holds true, the secret to the brand’s success is the commingling and layering of unexpected materials – think quilted leather or cable-knit sleeves combined with faux fur and leather bodices.  In the end, the ultimate swoon factor is how these stunning pieces simply morph from one silhouette to the next.  Thanks to removable layers and detachable lengths, a moto-jacket can become a cropped leather vest and fur-lined coats can easily go from winter to spring with a quick unzip of a lining allowing for a two-for-one deal of a garment and providing your closet with its’ own transformer.

The newly established brand is much more than its timeline suggests, and it’s structured, convertible Fall/ Winter 2013 collection definitely proves it.  As for their Spring/Summer 2014 collection, we’ll leave you drooling over a single word–vests.
