Designers to Watch: Kim Shui

Every so often a designer comes along and wows the fashpack to the nines; these creatives are the ones to watch as they often enough leave their mark on industry in a heroic and bold way. Much can be said about Kim Shui, who presented her designs on the VFILES Fall 2016 runway show.

Kim Shui’s background is one of skill, experience and endurance; having studied Economics and French before even touching a fashion design book, Shui’s future was already being mapped out as a thunderbolt-creative. In a year alone, she won a place at NYFW to show her AW16 ready-to-wear collection, after which she was swiftly selected by Vogue Italia to exhibit at Pitti Super Talents in Milan.

Raised in Rome, it was evident that the majority of the collection she showed at Fashion Week had an air of Italian influence; a certain Prada and Miu Miu-esque vibe, with a Shui twist. Panels of fur in rich tones, with plaid and lace thrown into the mix made for historic moments piece by piece. Intergalactic ankle boots with contrasting fur pom poms made a clear-hearing statement which can only be perceived as, ‘I’m here to be unforgettable so don’t you forget about me’. It was pretty hard not to, Kim!

With the fashion industry backing emerging designers, alongside your household names, it’s thrilling to see such fresh talent season after season. And if they’re all like Kim Shui then the big boys need to look out as there’s a new thundercat in town, and she’s unstoppable.
