Designers To Watch: Tanya Taylor

Despite being a relatively new girl on the scene, Tanya Taylor is no stranger to the fashion industry’s paramount crowd – but that’s no surprise. After scoring a finalist position for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund earlier this year, critics were swooning over her during New York Fashion Week in September, and not long after that First Lady Michelle Obama had been spotted in her designs.

Born and raised in Toronto, Tanya’s influences come from three generations of “fiercely ambitious women” although her educational background is less conventional compared to her design peers. She graduated with a degree in Finance, moved over to London’s Central St Martin for a summer course, and then joined Parsons The New School For Design to embark another fashion course.

So, are the combination of skills and globetrotting for studies be the reason why Tanya’s collections are so tight, calculated, relatable and somewhat empowering of women? Quite possibly. Especially as her collections are noted as a “sense of optimism and ingenuity” – which is what, if anything, her 2015 collection is a celebration of. There are bursts of different hues, playful takes on texture with lambskin and silk, dainty prints, shapes, and even a dig at jewelry with statement necklaces.

If this isn’t one to watch, then we’re not sure what else would qualify.
