Get the Look: A Ruby Red Statement Pout

The past few seasons have honed in on sultry berry lips like no other. The trend took center stage during the SS16 shows and has only grown in popularity for AW16. From deep blackcurrant tones at Burberry Prorsum SS16 to bright strawberry shades at Maison Margiela and Saint Laurent AW16, there’s an option for everyone, no matter what your color preference.

However, it was Pat McGrath’s take on this classic makeup staple for the Versace Fall 2016 Couture show that truly made us stop and take note. McGrath used pigments from her cult Pat McGrath Labs line and laced the lips with an unlikely ingredient: glitter. The effect was meant to look “simultaneously young and chic,” says McGrath, who notes that the key to keeping glitter from skewing too young is isolating it in a single, high-impact makeup statement. “That will maintain the balance and beauty of the face,” she says.

To recreate the look at home, opt for a dark red lip liner to anchor the look, taking it along your natural lip line, drawing in onto the lip on the outer corners for a gradient effect. Next, choose your lip color and finish with a pressing of glitter before it sets.  Or, for a more entry level approach consider a glitter-spiked lip-gloss layered onto nude lips. The key to this look? Accompanying it with clean, raw skin, softly groomed brows and mascara on the top lash line only.
