Jonathan Saunders, surrounded by images of inspiration

Keeping track of one’s life can seem overwhelming at times. Work. Friends. Volunteering.  Your favorite jacket is at the dry cleaners and you have forgotten to pick it up. Twice. You know you made an appointment for a hair cut, but you can’t seem to remember exactly when.  What to do? What to do?

The Solution is simple: Smythson of Bond Street, purveyor of fine stationery and beautiful leather goods. Smythson is about effortless luxury. It is about workmanship and seamless design. A yearly diary from the company, with it’s goatskin leather and fabulous gold and silver embossed lettering, and suddenly your life is more organized, and your every appointment in order.   Smythson makes you smile.

In the past, collaborations with fashion line Erdem and jewelry designer Holly Fulton have proven to be wildly successful for the 124 year old brand, becoming coveted items and selling out almost immediately.  Smythson’s latest collaboration with Scottish designer and British Fashion Council Award winner Jonathan Saunders, should undoubtedly yield the same ‘must-have’ status.  Mr. Saunders is known for his use of prints and mastery of the silk screening process, seen in his signature flora and fauna inspired print, which manages to be both cool and classic at once. His collection for Smythson, influenced by the designer’s autumn/winter 2011 collection, includes notebooks, 2012 diaries and iPad cases. Featuring two shades of color-blocked goatskin leather (in camel/red and blue/green), divided by an inlay of black velvet and a brushed gold and black enamel slide closure, the diaries are lined in Saunders’ signature printed silk. They are a joy to behold and to hold.

That Jonathan designed an iPad case as a part of the collection shows how the written word and the latest technology mesh seamlessly together. The bird and flower print silk fabric on the inside of the 2012 diaries and notebooks will inspire you to keep track, and to treasure, your daily activities. The things that really make up your life. Having a daily dairy is a way to record memories, and make a keepsake all at the same time, all the while remembering those errands and appointments. I look at my stack of diaries and notebooks and sense a life in motion, a life well lived, a life full of things to do tomorrow, next week and in the coming year. It makes me smile.
