Lines We Love: Delvaux

– By Sara Micelotta –

Way before the French introduced us to Louis Vuitton trunks and totes, the Belgians opened our eyes to Delvaux. Founded in Brussels more than 180 years ago—during a time when a horse and carriage was the most common form of transportation, and the luggage one carried was as important as the outfit one chose to wear while strolling through the streets of the right-bank—Delvaux is the oldest fine leather luxury goods house in existence. Aside from its sheer experience in the leather industry and ties to the Belgian Royal court (they were the official luggage and handbag supplier in the late 1800’s), Delvaux’s appeal begins with its superior craftsmanship. Handbags and travel pieces are entirely handmade in the brands ateliers in Belgium and France, which utilize only the most luxurious European calf leathers. If that’s not enough to woo you, then consider the brand’s dedication to timeless elegance. Despite the unavoidable changes in clients’ needs and modes of transportation, Delvaux’s designs have been adapted without altering the actual design process. Try to name another brand that can say the same—I dare you!

For those of you who aren’t easily persuaded to make room in your New York City-sized closet for another classic calfskin bag and have already monopolized any free communal space, including the oven (thank you, Carrie Bradshaw), you’ll be sure to make an exception for Delvaux’s stunning designs, which are also produced in a number of exotic leathers, including crocodile, python and ostrich. And remember, an investment in a timeless purchase is always worth the splurge.
