Runway Report: Altuzarra Fall 2016

Inspired by the Jim Jarmusch film ‘Only Lovers Left Alive’ starring Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston as vampire lovers, Joseph Altuzarra was quick to point out it wasn’t the vampires themselves that inspired him but their curiosity. “They have very esoteric interests, and they live in a lush but isolated world. I wanted this show to be about trying different things not necessarily connected.”

Much like the film’s characters whose romance endured several centuries, the looks were a beautiful mix of 19th century textiles, Venetian pearl buttons and modern utilitarian styles. Paisleys, petite florals, stripes and color blocks were played off against a colour palette of brown, black, burgundy and navy. Tailoring was key, as were the slit dresses and skirts that have now become an Altuzarra staple.

Standouts included a shearling inspired aviator jacket, a fringe knit worn with sapphire velvet-trim trousers, and a paisley-printed blazer. The show’s gentler moments featured printed handkerchief dresses which were intricately embroidered and worn over long-sleeved tops.
