Runway Report: Anya Hindmarch

The mere notion of an accessories designer unveiling their collection via a runway show instead of the oft-done presentation should have tipped us off that we were in for something special. But then, one expects nothing less from Anya Hindmarch. Her choice of medium, however, was the least of the surprises in store.

Though it began like any other, her show then suddenly transformed; twinkling lights began to sparkle like stars, and overhead spheres suddenly glowed, giving the space an other worldly feel. Handbags began to descend from the sky, slowly dancing up and down above the runway. In an explosive finish, Cirque de Soleil-like acrobats (grasping glitter covered Hindmarch pouches, naturally) appear and soar effortlessly over the runway.

Now there were the bags – they would have to be quite beautiful to hold their own amidst all the spectacle. They were. Oversized shoulder versions were done in creamy grey with python flaps, and in butter yellow python with a zipper-detailed handle. A structured, color blocked, top-handle was done in cream with storm-grey sides. A particular stunner – destined perhaps for ‘It Bag” status – was a bright orange and blue oversized tote with matching oversized orange and blue tassels. Showing her more playful side, Hindmarch did a python version of the popular “Have a Nice Day” shopping bag, which was adorably hung along the runway.

Hindmarch has a knack for always filling her collections with both the seriously lust-worthy and the whimsical tongue-in-cheek. Both meticulously done, remind us not to take ourselves too seriously; fashion is, after all, supposed to be fun.
