Runway Report: Balmain Fall 2017

Olivier Rousteing gets his customer base and he’s steadily become the expert in giving them what they want. So this season the #BalmainArmy were decked out in every ‘rock chick’s’ go-to collection of prints from leopard to tiger and crocodile, complete with a plentiful side of fringing, metallic finishes and extreme shoulder pads.

Led by Gigi Hadid, Olivier’s girls sashayed down a well-trodden path, but this time it was sexier, sultrier, if that’s possible. Smokey eyes, plump lips and neat cornrow braids accompanied body-con mini dresses cinched at the waist with wide crocodile belts. On other dresses with voluminous flared sleeves, fringing danced around the knees, layering over thigh-high snakeskin or suede boots.

Let’s dwell on those boots for a moment… Bound to adopt a cult following for sure – something Balmain isn’t unfamiliar with. Also an array of outsize t-shirts, vintage in style, seen with band prints and tie dye will also surely be a retail hit.

The collection had just a hint of the 1970s with ombré flares up front, then later suede separates that comprised of a belted tunic and matching pants. The palette was consistent too, with tones of tan, rust and chocolate.

As expected heavy embellishment played a role, with visible stitching, rivets, straps and studs forming repeat patterns across bomber jackets and matching outfits.

Knitwear bought about something a little fresh for Balmain, adding an air of nostalgia to proceedings. Long-line sweaters, textural oversized full-length coatigans and dramatic capes slung around the shoulders provided a fitting conclusion – out the Army went in to the cold city, after a night on the tiles.
