Runway Report: BCBG Max Azria Spring 2016

It’s always nice when a designer or brand decides to really spread their wings, to show us something completely unexpected. Happily, that’s precisely what happened today at the BCBG Max Azria’s SS16 runway show.”If you come in and you see what you expect that’s kind of boring” said Lubov Azria. It started with new inspiration. Rather than traveling the world to discover a muse, as per usual, they played it close to home, literally. ‘Well we’re actually based in California so this time we were like “why don’t we stay here!”‘.

The easy West Coast style and spirit was alive and well throughout each and every piece of the collection. There were board shorts presented as trousers, tie-dye knits layered with spaghetti strap blanket knitted dresses, multi-fabricated and colored bucket hats and a palette reflective of the sky during sunrise and sunset displaying canary yellows, pale pinks and baby blues. “We did a little bit of research on skate and surf culture and art and music from the 50s to the late 70s and we found that it was such an amazing era that influenced the world and even though we (bcbg) don’t really skate (or surf) we loved the idea of it so we did our own mix of So-Cal.”

In fact, with such a large mix of textiles and fabrications, when asked if there was a particular favorite she responded with; “It was about the mix! People always assume that clothes, it has to be something really thought through and to me, right now, there is a shift in fashion, it’s more individual and how you approach things, what your life is like and it’s very refreshing. Doing this for 25 years I always felt like you had to be a certain way and I love the idea of breaking the rules, I like the idea of mixing things up, I like the idea that we can change!” A far cry from any pre-disposed notion of what we thought it would be, clearly they’re taking this idea of a new shift in fashion seriously and applying it liberally to the future of the BCBG Max Azria brand.
