Runway Report: Christian Dior SS16

In the days following Dior’s Spring 2016 runway show, most of the associated commentary heard around Paris alluded to the floral fantasy of a venue that housed the catwalk this season – a spectacular delphinium-covered tent erected in a courtyard of the Louvre. When the lasting impression of a fashion presentation is more about the décor rather than the collection, it might be safe to assume that the looks were less than captivating.

While the offerings mustered by Raf Simons for next spring weren’t boring by any means, they were – in a word – soft.  The fabrics and their lightness, the lack of structure and the faint color palette amounted to a discreet whisper of a collection rather than the impactful, trendsetting statement usually made by a Simons collection for Dior.

Of course, the white cotton separates with scalloped edges will be lovely to wear once the warm weather arrives. The same can be said of the very pretty, pastel-hued organza pieces that are sure to inspire stylish summer layering. Also covetable were the cropped, oversized sweaters that again featured the scallop-edged detail peppering so many of the looks.

Bodies with slim proportions and toned midsections will certainly be required, however, in order to pull off these ensembles with aplomb.  A great majority of the show’s exits may prove difficult to transition from runway to “real girl”, considering that so many feature horizontal stripes of varying widths and exposed midriffs. But if these looks may be challenging for some to wear, the chic shoe options presented on the runway are definite frontrunners to be included among next spring’s staples. Rendered in brilliant vinyl with thick, round heels and ultra-pointy toes, the shoes were finished with oversized buckles embellishing the ankle ties. These, perhaps more than anything else, were the ultimate must-have from this collection.
