Runway Report: Derek Lam

Its not easy making everyone – and their mothers’ – favorite childhood print look sophisticated and chic, so if we’re going to wear gingham, it’ll need to be done right. For Derek Lam, this means balancing the old with the new—and what better way to do so than by reinventing a school-girl staple? Lam’s girls strutted gracefully down the runway in large-scale check blazers, dresses, tops and skirts in cobalt blue and black, showing the fashion community that nothing can truly ‘go out of style. Those models that followed rocked classic silhouettes of various lengths in what appeared to be a gauzy silk shown in black, white and yellow ombré. Lam even paired a carefully selected group of pieces with four-inch wide waist-belts in matching patterns, giving each design a little extra oomph.

Though we did see a few of the expected ‘all white everything’ looks, which were suitably complemented by the show’s setting in the Sean Kelly Gallery, the real showstoppers came in visions of gingham, denim and summer tweeds. Thank you, Derek, for so kindly providing us with an outfit for any time of day and occasion!
