Runway Report: Dolce & Gabbana SS16

This season, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana decided to create an ode to Italia, a celebration of the wonders and beauty that their home country (and all of the cities that reside in it) provide to the locals and to the tourists that joyously visit.

The clothes were in one word, happy. For one thing, it was certainly an eclectic mix. There were smart and chic bolero-type blazers paired with buttoned vests and cropped cigarette pants, a plethora of uber colorful embroideries of big and bright floral motifs which seemed to dance atop of dress coats, circle skirts, and silk organza gowns, and of course plenty of femme fatale black lace dresses and two-piece options, most of which were covered in sequins and crocheted appliqués of fruits, flowers and women sunbathing on what was sure to be on the beaches of the Amalfi coast.

Their beaming pride for Italy clearly runneth over as it was displayed in a literal form too. Dresses were emblazoned with everything from the city’s names in bright gold threads (“Rome”, “Sicily” and of course our personal favorite, “Palermo”) to the country’s art and architectural landmarks like the leaning tower of Pisa, Michelangelo’s David and even the Colosseum. Of course the number of simple tshirts, shift dresses and floor sweeping gowns with the statement “I love Italy” or “Italia is love” embroidered onto them was also a clue.

However fun and flirty the clothing, to us, the accessories nearly stole the show. Their much sought after headphones and headband crowns made a reappearance – this time with flower buds and fruit shapes encrusting their surfaces – classic chic silk printed scarves also joined the head adorning party this season. Straw baskets, oversized embellished and beaded sunglasses and the mirror, pom-pom and tassel covered ankle wrapped sandals (flat and heeled), slippers and handbags has all of us counting down the secondi until they’re available to purchase.
