Runway Report: Elie Saab SS16

An Elie Saab runway show usually features slight variations on his tried and true formula: feminine, monochromatic looks confectioned from matte silk crepe, chiffon and/or tulle, with a heavy dose of embellishment for evening-wear looks. The results have proven successful for the brand, as evidenced by its prevalence in the wardrobes of the world’s most glamorous women and with the recent opening of a magnificent flagship boutique on Avenue George V in Paris. Thus, the Spring 2016 collection raised a few of the perfectly shaped eyebrows that lined the rows at Saab’s runway show in Paris this week.

Stripes, transparency and sportswear were the hallmarks of the latest collection from Elie Saab which was successfully styled to reflect a notably younger vibe. Bold colors were combined with an impactful black and white stripe. Varsity jackets were worn over floaty cocktail dresses. And many of the looks featured mismatched separates, reflecting a realistic style of dressing familiar to a next-generation audience. There was also a subtle seventies undercurrent in this collection, most noticeable in the balloon-sleeved blouses, bow-tie necklines, and disco-worthy jumpsuits. Finally, as seen on runways throughout Paris Fashion Week, skyscraper stilettos have given way to a much lower heel height. Never have Elie Saab’s evening gowns looked more modern than when elegantly worn with a flat sandal.
