Runway Report: Giambattista Valli Couture Fall 2017

This season, Giambattista Valli took his guests inside the picturesque garden of the Petit Palais in Paris for his Fall 2017 Couture collection. In it, he displayed an array of flourishing and romantic gowns that reflected the idyllic scenery so precisely that it felt like something out of a Haute Couture fairytale.

One by one, his nymph-like inspired models came down the runway (each of them standing extra tall thanks to an exaggerated 7-inch platform pump), at first in bold cocktail dresses encrusted in layers of macrame crystals and lavish embroidery then ending in a splendor of his multi-ruffled pleated tulle ball gowns. He provided a little something for everyone this time around as if trying to broaden his reach of clientele yet simultaneously pleasing and intriguing his current fans as well. And while the lustful collection was one of the more wearable couture collections compared to those in his past, there was absolutely no sacrifice to the work, style and result within the pieces themselves.

He also played with silhouettes in a more dramatic fashion. Many of the designs went from parties in the front, with hemlines just gracing the mid-thigh, to all business in the back, exploding into floor-sweeping gowns. There were exquisitely polished short and sexy A-line ensembles, romantic off the shoulder silk chiffon and lace gowns (with and without floral printing), as well as a variety of more simple Grecian style draped dresses seen in hues of canary yellow, sherbert and dusty rose. And of course, while we know everyone will be talking about the voluminous finale gowns, we found his shorter hemline numbers fresher and more fashion-forward, particularly a stunning silver cocktail coat made entirely of embroidered crystals and mirrors that literally put sparkles in all of our eyes.
