Runway Report: Jonathan Simkhai SS19

The thing I love most about spring/summer collections is the breath of fresh air they bring each year to the industry. They come at just the right time – an optimistic spring clean if you will – when the darker nights begin to draw in and post-vacation blues are rife, the kids head back to school etc etc.

There’s a theme already emerging for spring/summer 2019 and it’s less about political undertones, or making a statement and more about escapism, wanderlust and well, fun. For man-of-the-moment Jonathan Simkhai, sweet prairie references inspired silhouettes and fabrics, from plaids in an assortment of sugary tones to broderie anglaise and wide-brim hats, first designed to keep the sun off on the plains.

Youthful, feminine and confident are adjectives that all ring true for the Simkhai woman, with the styling this season exemplifying the notion. Take an off-the-shoulder, pale ombré pink button-down dress,
with a bandeau neckline and slim tiers of lace finishing just above the ankle. It was paired with utilitarian style suede boots but in a bubblegum pink. Later we saw fluid wide-leg trousers with big utility pockets and a matching floor length sleeveless jacket, worn with a deep-v vest and wide-brim fedora. This is the new form of power dressing – its beautiful, its sassy but super-strong too.

Evening wear and possible bridal options were abundant, with feathery soft lace and chiffon seen in primrose yellow and off white. Two contrasting necklines were recurring, either a modest high-necked
blouse harking back to traditional prairie shapes, or the flirtatious bandeau, often with puffed sleeves pushed down off shoulders.Underwear inspired pattern-cutting with bra and brief-like seams
visible, whilst waists were always cinched either with a seam or tightly fastened leather belt.

The designer’s own Instagram profile used words like ‘escape, exhale and unwind’ to describe the collection – and thanks to his vision, that we did.
