Runway Report: ODLR + Monse Fall 2017

Guests who arrived bright eyed and bushy tailed for the Oscar de la Renta show received a double whammy for their fashion buck. The newly appointed creative-duo, Laura Kim, and Fernando Garcia, also founders and designers of Monse, showcased said label first, followed by Oscar de la Renta.

The fash-pack looked on in amazement at the bravery of the designers but were firmly and swiftly distracted by the collection when it began. Since the passing of Oscar de la Renta, much of a gaze has been cast on the brand, with questions often steering towards “what now?” and “we wonder what they’ll create.” However, taking over from an industry veteran is no small feat, so firstly we’d like to say bravo to Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia.

As for the collection; well, it did own a hint of Oscar’s signature; after all, once you’ve shadowed greatness, the best form of a compliment is flattery, and in this case, it worked for the new designers. Cinched in waists were seen held together with robust gold flower belts, and the white beaded full-skirt bustier dress that hit the ankles sure felt like a flashback. A classic black, one-shoulder velvet dress was jazzed up and paired with highly silver and crystal embellished knee high boots, while a little neon yellow made an appearance in the form of a full sequinned bustier top under a well fitted black pantsuit.
A sea of kohl, Valentine’s red, floral brocade, fuchsia pink, cobalt blue, metallic mustard, primary green and monochrome lend itself well to a modern day lady, who still has a diary full of de la Renta worthy events, but just wants something a little younger. The Fall 17′ collection felt like the Oscar de la Renta lady got an upgrade, and we weren’t complaining.
