Runway Report: Ralph & Russo Couture Fall 2017

Parallels between photography and Haute Couture were drawn by designer Tamara Ralph at the Ralph & Russo show this week in Paris. More specifically, iconic fashion photographers like Richard Avedon and Cecil Beaton were cited as the inspiration for the Autumn/Winter 2017/2018 collection.  Arguing that Couture, like photography, captures an individual’s unique personality, Ralph presented her own interpretation of a female portrait.

“Pale iridescence” would best describe the colors and textures reflected throughout the wow-worthy parade of 57 looks. The soft tones and shimmering nuances were elevated to the haute-est of heights through the generous use of frosty crystals, pearlescent silks and metallic lace. Add to that the heapings of hand embroidery and feathers galore, and the resulting line-up is ice princess perfect.

With a strong emphasis on eveningwear now de rigeur at Ralph & Russo, a few coquettish surprises came in the form of day(ish) options. An asymmetric off-the-shoulder collar on a tweed skirt suit looked remarkably chic, for example. Within the dizzying array of gowns shown we spied several slinky numbers that made beautiful use of what looked like Swarovski chain mail. Fringe, too – of the beaded, silk and feather varieties – added flirtatious movement to a good portion of looks, as did the tulle, lace or chiffon overlays employed by the designers to add a new veil of dimension to classic fishtail silhouettes.

Of course, it wouldn’t be Ralph & Russo Haute Couture without a jaw-dropping bridal gown as the finale, and this season’s dramatic final exit was imbued with Bollywood glamour – not only because Sonam Kapoor served as the model, but also because of the ornately beaded headdress she wore to complement the champagne Chantilly lace and duchess satin confection.
