Runway Report: Sachin and Babi AW17

Some couples like to celebrate their anniversaries by going to a romantic dinner or taking a long weekend away somewhere. Sachin and Babi Ahluwalia, on the other hand, celebrated their 20 year anniversary (both of the design and relationship kind) by putting together a runway show that perfectly spliced the eccentric splendor of Indian and British culture appropriately displayed at The National Arts Club in Gramercy.

The culmination of this amalgam was a collection full of stunning pieces (mainly dresses and gowns) made of voluminous taffeta, slinky silks and intricate lace that were lavishly printed and embellished with English garden prints and Swarovski crystals. Balanced by stark black separates and adorned with Maharani necklaces and antique crystal ceremonial headpieces, the looks were not only perfect for any special event in your calendar but styled as if they were built for an editorial dream.

“This collection was an ode to our heritage. We looked at old English floral wallpaper and incorporated them into modern anoraks which we made from mikado fabric as we loved the form it gives. As for the jewelry: we were inspired by looking at old vintage “Kundan pieces ” which have uncut stones inlaid, however as we wanted to make our pieces more modern and lighter we worked on plexiglass, resin and beautiful deep colored crystals.”
