Runway Report: Self-Portrait SS19

On a morning in New York City, Self-Portrait designer, Han Chong, debuted the Spring Summer 2019 collection. Statement dressing proved ever-prominent throughout the collection. His signature dresses walked the collection, eventually evolving into full-length gowns. Ruffled poplin blouses transcended. Chong debuted distinguished graphics, in a palette inspired by a trip to Ibiza. Geometric florals carried a semblance of the ‘70s.

Self-Portrait carried forth its DNA through another season, of course. Mixed prints, incorporating florals and geometrics, were layered together and then layered with actual additional pieces- including sweaters. Self-Portrait has also shown beauty through conceptual design and strength, through styling. Exaggerated sleeves, as well as asymmetrical necklines manifested in various hues of blue, pink and yellow.

Lurex knits paired back to multi-colored (and multi-printed) skirts. Speaking to a relaxed simplicity, the collection pieces were stand-out, whilst still carrying the ease of effortlessness. Pleats and frills softened geometrical prints. Ruching provided a femininity, along with bell hemlines. Lace and crochet alluded to the Ibiza inspiration, said to have driven the Spring Summer 2019 Self-Portrait collection inspiration. Even Chong’s most body-conscious, hugging garments, carried an airy weight to them, making their incorporation into the collection, simply seamless.
