Runway Report: Sportmax SS18

‘Fluid and free’ were the Italian brand’s objectives for spring/summer 2018. A feminine line with more than a few sporty touches and a nod to 1970s styling was presented in Milan this week.

These seem to be recurring themes this season – sports luxe with a retro twist and an ethos centred around freedom are style notes designers keep coming back to. Technique was clever here with leatherwork, artful proportion play and all manner of pleats and gathers cascading from hem and necklines.

Particular favourites were a butter-soft leather primrose yellow dress, using parachute style straps, hitching fabric up in unusual ways. Plus, a shift dress with a subtle floral print and thick elastic striped bands around the waist.

Candy strips made an appearance here too, seen adorning a finely knitted matching tank and thigh-skimming mid-length skirt and a matching boxy jacket and ankle-grazing pant set.

Accessories were another talking point with striped utility belts, boxy bum bags and larger barrel shaped bags. The footwear, predominantly flip flop style with wide ankle straps will also surely be a retail winner.
