Runway Report: Tibi SS17

According to Amy Smilovic, her SS17 collection was “a little bit of Edwardian proportions. Strong color. Finding a way to do corsetry and big shoulders and everything in a way that’s very eased out and modern and not costume-y. The way that you want to wear it.”

Tibi has always been about function and ease, so it was a surprise to see corsets on the runway. Lightly boned waist trainers were layered over simple tees, so the results were clean and modern. “It really is about seeing that waistline,” Smilovic said. “I was thinking about how if my whole aesthetic is about being relaxed and eased-out, how does something like corsetry work into that?”

The collection was also rife with big, high-waisted trousers, Edwardian style blouses with controlled volume on the sleeves, flowing silk dresses in shades of blush, saffron, and clementine, and cool sculptural earrings done in collaboration with Paige Novick.

Clean, minimalist, relaxed and feminine, Smilovic has managed to transform corsetry into cool, current daywear.
