Runway Report: Topshop Unique SS18

Continuing to showcase their interpretation of various street style seen throughout the world, this season their inspiration was just a stones throw away, immersing themselves into the spirit of the soho neighborhood of London (before the days of instagram where “you had to be there” to experience it) and putting it front and center for their Spring 2018 runway.

The spotlight shined brightly on their soho girl, “a style star with street spirit”, as the show notes read. Beginning with the backdrop of blurred neon city signs (what one’s vision may display if out late in the nightclub driven area) and ending with the rock and roll spirit that lived within their sartorial ensembles. Even when meant for day (like their power suiting in golden hues) or their oversized coats in leather, nubby knits and marabou, each was balanced with either a sheerness within blouses, or spaghetti strap flowing dresses that reflected more of a boudoir atmosphere or a hemline of a shining minidress with square neckline often layered with a lurex turtleneck, again more appropriate for night rather than day.

Other gritty and gleaming details could be found throughout the collection. For instance, even if just a trim along the wrist of a coat, or dangling from an ear, there was glitz and shimmer to be seen. Most often in art-deco earrings, chokers and oversized pearl details but also in as little as individual crystals along brazen see-through blouses. And while the pieces were styled to show versatility for day to night wear, there’s no doubt that even in the day, this was a girl destined for a night to remember out on the town.
