Runway Report: Valentino SS18

While most of the fashion industry seems hooked on sci-fi, albeit with an air of retrofuturism, Valentino’s Pierpaolo Piccioli had a far more romantic vision. Inspired by the 16th century Renaissance poem The Frenzy of Orlando by Ludovico Ariosto, Piccioli likened the mention of the moon to a refuge of second chances at love and life. What ensued was a suitably ethereal collection, full of subtly cosmic tones and utilitarian details.

Particular highlights included a cagoule, complete with sporty toggles and covered in large iridescent sequins; not to mention a boxy sailing jacket with white, bright yellow and grey panels with sleeves covered in matching sequins worn on an equally bejeweled cropped sweatshirt.

It seems as though a couple of new wardrobe staples emerged too, from the skinny straight-leg jeans worn long, coming part-way down the model’s foot, to the super-pointed pumps with cute bows in an array of colours.
Elsewhere pretty prints on flirty dresses made for a more feminine feel, but were kept in-line with the rest of the ‘almost’ athletic collection using wide block colour edging or outlining printed panels. Each was teamed with chunky sandals or the covetable new cross-body bag, featuring straps that criss-cross around the back to ensure things didn’t come across ‘too’ ladylike.
Later, the exquisite gowns we always look forward to from Valentino were there – a vibrant floral all-over-print adorned a structural maxi, while a fluid chiffon coral number would be the perfect (albeit rather opulent) beach cover-up and a crushed velvet gown, tapered at the waist in pillarbox red came with practical pockets.
