Shopping For: Feathers

– By Teresa Greenfeld –

Growing up, we all had at least one feather boa amongst the too-big-by-a-longshot dresses (origin unknown), chains of fake pearls, and clip on earrings that made up our collection of “dress-up” clothes.  Mine was bright purple, which I pared with a pink ballet outfit.  And red lipstick.  And patent studded cowboy boots (the obsession started early).

Not surprisingly, we’re still turing to feathers when we want to dress-up; as they’re most often found in evening-wear, on everything from dresses to clutches to shoes. A feathered skirt worn with even a simple white T and sky high heels is evening appropriate, and has a “I just threw this on” glamour to it.  For every day, the options are endless: jewelry is certainly the easiest way to incorporate feathers, and as a print it’s subtle enough that it doesn’t overwhelm.

These days, though I’ve long since retired my purple boa, I find myself still looking to feathers for the whimsical and ethereal touch they bring.
