Sugar and Shoes – Dumbo, Brooklyn

The Lollipop Chandelier in Dewey's Candy Store

On a recent stroll through Brooklyn, Olivia (in an orange cashmere blazer by Agnona that I made a mental note to borrow a.s.a.p.)  and I popped into Dewey’s Candy in Brooklyn, a favorite and apparently regular stop for her.  As soon as we walked in, the owner greeted Olivia with a huge grin and a warm hug. While they chatted, I wandered around the sugary paradise, where huge lollipops hang from the ceiling, forming Willy Wonka’s dream chandelier, and tried (unsuccessfully) to ignore my growling stomach.

Dewey’s is the well-edited, chic candy store amongst the amplified sugar-pushers that gives you a cavity just from setting foot inside it.  They stock the best of each candy category, from gummies to chocolates to novelty sweets.  The icing on the now unnecessary cake (sorry), are the brightly colored buckets and trays provided to tote your sugary bounty throughout the store.  After giving into temptation and loading up from the cornucopia before us, we left, with heavy bags and high anticipation.

As we walked around DUMBO, hoping to burn some pre-candy calories, we wandered into NOS, a shoe and accessory boutique that stocks unique and up and coming designers.  Olivia went straight for a pair of olive, stacked-heel, lace-up oxfords, while I made a beeline for the leather jackets – an amazing grey funnel collared one by Mackage, in particular. Shen, the boutique’s assistant buyer, bounced styling ideas around with us, and happened to be wearing the same shoes that caught Olivia’s eye, (adorably styled with green patterned socks). While we pondered pant legs (skinny vs flared), and toe shapes (pointed vs. rounded), Olivia purchased the heels and I debated splurging on the leather jacket.  With the nagging voice in my head (which sounded oddly like my mother), I begrudgingly put the jacket back in favor of paying rent,  and we said our goodbyes to Shen.  But as we made our way back to Olivia’s apartment, all it took for me to perk up again was a little dip into my brightly colored Dewey’s bag.
