Travel: Blue Diamond Resort, Riviera Maya

Typically when one hears the words “all-inclusive” there are simultaneous feelings that come into play. There’s of course excitement at the thought of paying one price for absolutely everything you’ll need – drinks, food, service, etc. However, (and sometimes unfortunately), “all-inclusive” can also typically come with an over-crowded, over-sized and impersonal property that you tend to want to forget/escape by the end of your trip.

Giving everyone a brand new perception on what “all-inclusive” could and should mean is the Blue Diamond Resort in Riviera Maya Mexico.  This award-winning adult-only boutique hotel is spread out over 36 lush acres situated only 40 minutes from the Cancun airport and 10 minutes from downtown Playa del Carmen. Two infinity pools, a bar and a jacuzzi overlook the private beach (and beach service) that are all yours for the relaxing and indulging. A 25,000 sq. ft. spa which sans payment allows for the water circuit to be at your disposal – we’re talking steam room, pools, sauna, etc. and almost 130 rooms which range from one bedroom modernized suites to two-floor beach-front houses. Each room is equipped with floor to ceiling windows sporting natural elements like bamboo and limestone with luxury amenities like sunken jacuzzi tubs and rainforest showers (some even feature private roof decks, outdoor bathtubs and lounge decks overlooking the river). And while the property is certainly expansive, there are no worries to be had as golf-carts with drivers are only a phone call away to whisk you around to wherever you want. There really is nothing less than 5-star personal service oozing from this perfect hotel.

On to the food.  Forget the idea of warming trays filled with a standard continental breakfast or being packed into a too-loud-to-hear-yourself-think space and the stigma of Mexican food… in Mexico, the three dining options and two bars (a cigar bar as well) at Blue Diamond are of the upmost quality and sophistication.  Allow the dreams of laying on a pool-side cabana while shrimp ceviche, oysters and salt-rimmed margaritas are delivered without lifting a finger become a reality or enjoy the up-scale white glove service at Ambar, where everything from tuna, sole and scallops to lamb chops, filet and quail are exquisitely prepared and presented. Of course if you can’t pull yourself out of your 500-thread count sheeted four-poster bed you can always order delicious food and drinks to come to your door via 24 hour room-service. In fact, with more than enough options to choose from it’s easy for those with the strictest dietary restrictions to enjoy every meal they have, no matter they’re having it.

Even the complimentary activities are kicked up a notch. Sure, there’s windsurfing and kayaking, sailing and snorkeling but what about a yummy wine tasting or culinary class (sushi making perhaps?) There’s even yoga and Spanish classes at no extra charge. More active visitors can take up a game of tennis or a round of golf on the stunning 18-hole golf course at the Grand Corale (for free if booking certain rooms/packages) or set up a day with the concierge to go to Tulum and Xel Ha for hiking the Mayan ruins and snorkeling in what is known as the largest aquarium in the world.
