Summer in the City: A Local's Brooklyn Guide

Inside our founder's neighborhood gems.

"This is the longest that Johannes and I have been home together in Brooklyn. Ever", shares Olivia deadpan with a laugh. Since the duo has spent much time at home, they've picked up some new skills—Johannes is the cook, while Olivia plays mixologist—but they've also embraced their neighborhood by getting better acquainted with their surroundings. "It's been amazing to be able to slow down, enjoy Dumbo's picturesque views, while supporting local businesses," says Olivia. "Lots of the places we go to are owner-operated, so helping ensure they make it through this period is paramount." Below, Olivia breaks down her most-frequented spots in and near her BK neighborhood for the best eats, hangouts, spa-like treats, and more. Then, because we can't resist a "what to wear" moment, there's a few summer style picks included along the way to dress up your days.

Morning Wake Up: Butler

"How could I not love a place that has the same name as my pup? This sunny café has the best teas plus irresistible croissants and breakfast treats, made by a Michelin-starred pastry chef."

Beauty Boost: Plaza M Spa

"It's no secret that I'm religious about my weekly mani/pedi visits, and my dear friend Stephany Koo recently opened a local outpost of my favorite nail salon, Plaza M Spa. Lately, I've been playing with different colors to match my mood, summer tan, and outfits."

Grocery Go-To: Dumbo Market

"Whenever I'm out, I always try to check out Dumbo Market and see what fab, fresh produce they have. One of Johannes's and my favorite meals from Mediterranean vacations is a light, yet yummy lunch filled with delicious veggies and just a drizzle of olive oil—so we love to replicate this using local ingredients."

Walk in the Park: Brooklyn Bridge

"Mister Butler's schedule definitely affects mine, but our mid-afternoon strolls in Brooklyn Bridge Park are heavenly. He gets to see his friends—a pomsky, a golden retriever, and a French bulldog—while I can get some sun and fresh air."

Self-Care Spot: Green Stone Spa

"One major indulgence that makes a huge impact is getting frequent massages. Around the corner from my place is the Green Stone Spa, where I get the sports or deep tissue treatments so that I can recover quickly from any workout fatigue."

Al Fresco Lunch: Le Crocodile

"I remember eating at this French restaurant when it first opened with my friends Mafalda and Edward, and I swear the food and vibes are plucked straight from a Nancy Meyers movie. Their safely, spaced-out garden patio is so charming—the only thing missing is a view of the Seine."

What to Wear Daytime Look

Date Night Dining: Cecconi's

"Johannes and I have fully embraced the idea of 'date nights'. I mean every day is a date night for us, but ever since New York entered phases 3 and 4, we've been dining out together, just us, at least once a week. We put our phones away and enjoy the socially distant ambiance and atmosphere. One of our favorites, Cecconi's, is just a stone's throw from our apartment. They have incredible pizzas and pasta, which pairs so well with their wines. Add in a picturesque view, and it's the perfect way to end our day."

Sweet Treats: OddFellows

"On hot summer evenings, I've taken to visiting OddFellows to grab an ice cream cone with sprinkles, of course, and a pint to take home that Johannes and I can enjoy later."

Local Nightcap: York Cellars

"This wine shop has such a unique curation of bottles, with friendly staff ready to lend their sommelier recommendations."

Dreamy Views: Skyline Drive-In

"Johannes and I recently got a Tesla, and we love it!  Since we can't go to indoor theaters anymore, I love the NYC comeback of the drive-in movie scene Skyline Drive-In on the waterfront rotates what it's showing and is a fun way for Johannes and me to use our car in a completely new way."
